The Answer: All In Three Days

An Resurrection Prayer ofThanksgiving

To set the scene of the agony Jesus faced in preparation of His journey to the cross, it's best for us to mentally picture the words in Luke describing Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene. From the moment we read "Father if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me", (Luke 22:42a) we have insight to Jesus' humanity. In that moment, Jesus was terrified for what was to come, and the best thing He could do in that moment was go to the Father in prayer. (Luke 22:41)

Although we receive a clear picture of the agony of Jesus just before the crucifixion, Jesus also provides us glimpses of hope in John’s gospel.  The thought of Jesus leaving the disciples made them feel uneasy, because they were so used to life on Earth with the Savior. Jesus provides comfort and hope when he advises the disciples that he is going to prepare a place for them, and that he wouldn’t prepare a place without coming back to get them and take them there.  (John 14:2) When Jesus tells the disciples that they know the way to where he is going, they are confused and they proclaim that that don’t know the way that Jesus is talking about.  One of the most powerful statements of Jesus follows Thomas’ question about the way to where he is going.  Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

Heavenly father, we thank you right now for the resurrection season.  This is the designated time that Believers all over the world commemorate what you did at Calvary. Nothing that you did on the cross was about you. It wasn’t about proving your majesty or your royalty…none of it was for you. Everything you did on the cross was about us. You hung on the cross in agony for hours thinking about us, the ones in desperate need of a savior. We are so grateful that you didn’t turn away from the assignment given to you by the Father. We’re so grateful that you stayed. We’re so grateful that you didn’t lean to your royalty and divinity and say “No, I’m done.”  You had every opportunity to reveal the depth of your power.  However, you were well aware of the task at hand, and you knew the importance of making sure that it was done...finished. So we thank you Jesus, for your sacrifice.

As we walk through the various stages of life, we know exactly how to handle them, thanks to you, Lord. When we are in trouble, in agony, and have tough decisions to make – whether self imposed or not, we can look to the example you gave in the Garden of Gathsemene.  When you were faced with a gruesome future in a crucifixion and were beyond unsettled by what was coming, you turned to the father and prayed as you had done many times before. You didn’t run to anyone else or try to sort through things alone. You went to the father. We too must go to the father when we are faced with the unthinkable. Scripture tells us that when you went to the father and prayed, angels appeared and strengthened you. (Luke 22:43) When seek Jesus in prayer, we too will be strengthened.

We thank you, Father, for the Holy Spirit, who continues to guide us and give us comfort when we need it.  And Lord, as we continue to live each day, awaiting your return, we know that we will be faced with things that are turbulent and chaotic. That is what the Word tells us and as Believers we know that it’s true. (Matthew 24:4-14) The evidence is all around. The one thing that we can always count on no matter the hardship or confusion, YOU ARE THE ANSWER to it all!!!  So although we can look at the things that happened in the garden, during the crucifixion, and the fact that you died - on the other hand, we can rejoice because you live! You are not dead! You conquered death and you rose again, showing all the world just how powerful you really are.

We are so thankful that we don’t have to wait until “Easter Sunday” to celebrate you Jesus. The word tells us that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. (Philippians 2:10-11) Resurrection Sunday allows us to proclaim that even louder.  We humbly thank you for your sacrifice Jesus, and we humbly honor you as our king.  Only the King of Kings could answer a lifetime of problems all in three days.  When Jesus came, he came on assignment. He came on a mission. He came with purpose. We thank you for all you are and all you have given us. We truly truly honor you as our Savior. We thank God for the Resurrection and what it means for Believers everywhere. Because you live, we can face tomorrow, with the anticipation of spending an eternity with you..  In Jesus name, Amen.
